Busy days...

I

I don't even know where to start. I can't believe that two weeks can go by and I forget to add to my website, let alone "blog".

These two little doggies stayed with me for just four days, but what great companions they are! They live with their people in Prince George, so I might not see them too often. I've had tons of laughs while they've been guests at the Pet Hostel; you can almost see what characters they are from their photo. They are Max (dark one) and Chico.

Aside from pet grooming (both dogs and cats), we've been busy here with boarding. I have not got around to taking a picture of each guest at the spa/kennel... the novelty of caring for them certainly has NOT worn off, but I often neglect to get the camera out. Those who check this weblog frequently will remember that I left my own digital camera out in the rain; it seems to finally have succumbed to the abuse. I've been using Gary's camera. This is not the reason for not taking more photos.

During the last couple of weeks, my perennial plants and roots also arrived. I've been busy planting those in pots for later sale to the public. One of the steps in THAT order of business was to erect our pipe-and-plastic greenhouse. The more times that the poor structure has blown over, the harder it is to put back together. Last thing last fall, the greenhouse was picked up by the ferocious winds (despite being lashed down by ropes) and left in a mangled pile. Pipes were bent, the sturdy plastic tarp-like covering was torn along seams, and I made no attempt at the time to put things right. I just picked what was left of the green tomatoes, and called it a day.

Since we cannot afford a new one this year, I managed to get the dilapitated greenhouse up and going. The covering doesn't fit well and the whole thing seems askew, but at least we have it. Last night there was a very hard frost, and I'm sure I'd have lost hundreds of dollars worth of plants (or they'd have been more seriously set back) if we hadn't had it. ALSO... we had rain, then freezing rain, and finally snow yesterday. It was midnight before I realized that it was going to be well below zero for the night, so I went out and covered all that I could with Reemay (floating row cover) cloth.

I should at least post a picture of said greenhouse if I'm going to write a story about it. Perhaps I'll get that done, too, eventually.

This is all for now. Though it's not warm outside, it is a beautiful, clear day. I should be out there working, though the choices are overwhelming.

Thanks for stopping by.

Gilbert

This is the little cat that was brought to me last year. She needed a home, and I "fell for her" right away. The next day she gave birth to 4 kittens, and we found good homes for them. I was calling her "Jill" after the friend who gave the cat to me, but I discovered that Jill's little girls had named the kitty "Gilbert", and that name stuck!

Gilbert is now a spayed cat, and though we leave cat kibbles out for her at all times, she stays busy patrolling the acreage, hunting mice or sometimes simply basking in the sun. I've seen her from a distance, sitting atop a fencepost at the farthest edge of our property, and I hope that even with so much freedom she can stay around for a long time.

We leave a ladder parked against the roof on the north side of our house. Gary climbs it in order to clean the chimney or eavestroughs, and it is most convenient to leave it in place.

As you can see, Gilbert enjoys watching us from the ladder, and though she is "allowed" indoors, seems to prefer this kind of visit.
